Ipod Touch - Buy Touch

I’m looking to buy an ipod touch, and I don’t have (and don’t want) internet at home. I understand most limitations I’ll have, but I want to know this:

Will the Genius feature work when I’m in a wi-fi spot with my touch? Or must my home computer be connected to the internet?

I am getting an iPod touch for Christmas, and I’m most likely getting the 1st generation. From what I can see, there aren’t that many differences between the 1st generation and 2nd generation iPod touch…I know of the volume control, the genius feature, and the rounded instead of flat body.
I don’t care about the body shape that much, but are there any other drastic differences between the 1st and 2nd generations of the iPod touch? i’m talking about speed, calibration, all that stuff. Graphics are also important.
